Our oceans are in crisis. the world’s coral reefs are undergoing arguably the worst bleaching event in human record, kelp forests are collapsing, and combining global climate stress with local impacts is pushing marine ecosystems into dangerous territory.

How can you help now??
 With a 'Freeze Off' Challenge!

Here's how it works:

Step #1 - buy your ticket

Every ticket gets you an entry into our cool giveaway from 10 brands and counting! We will be adding more items throughout December so keep checking back.

Step #2 - invite friends and family

Gather a group during one of your holiday get togethers to plunge for the oceans! Then, challenge 3 people to plunge and spread the word.

Wherever you find yourself this holiday season, set up a plunge with your people! Such a fun way to get out of the holiday rut.

Step #4 - plunge in and bring awareness to ocean conservation

Don't forget to share your plunge on social media and tag #reefcheck #surffur #freezeoff to be entered into another giveaway!

Reef Check
we see what's happening,we know what to do.

Here's what they have been recording:

Mass coral bleaching at record scale

Data from Reef Check's monitoring is key to driving effective management. Even if global action on climate is slow, local interventions matter and can buy critical time. The combination of global drivers + local stress means our window for meaningful action is shrinking.

Decline of kelp forests and temperate coastal ecosystems

Reef Check’s temperate‑program data shows kelp forests (especially along the U.S. West Coast) have faced dramatic declines: for example, some bull kelp forests declined by over 90% since 2014 due to warm water events, sea urchin population explosions and loss of predators.

We’re at a tipping point: interventions now can still make a difference.

The root drivers: climate change + local stressors

Long‑term data collected by Reef Check show that warming seas, increasing marine heatwaves, and acidification are altering reef and kelp ecosystems.

Local stressors — pollution, sediment runoff, overfishing — compound the effect of global change.

Reefs and kelp forests still show resilience — but time is running out

Reef Check emphasises that reefs and kelp systems can recover, but only if stress is reduced and restoration is supported. Their citizen‑science programs and long‑term monitoring are essential because they give data that show where interventions are working and where time is almost up.
